Jackson
County has a surprising array of park and recreational areas to showcase its
scenic beauty: two state parks and nearly 30 county parks and recreational
areas. Along most of the Jackson County's eastern border is the Upper
Mississippi Fish and Wildlife Refuge. Slicing through the county is the
scenic Maquoketa River. Nearly every town has a community park as well.Maquoketa Caves is probably Iowa's most unique state park. The park contains more caves than any other state park in Iowa. A beautiful trail system links the caves, formations and overlooks while providing an exciting hiking experience. High
bluffs with scenic views of the Mississippi River, timbered walking trails
to Indian mounds, a unique butterfly sanctuary and enclosed nature center
are just some of the features that make the Bellevue State Park special.
Excellent camping opportunities are offered in Jackson County. Travel trailer camping with all amenities are offered at six major camping areas. Primitive camping is also available in wildlife areas.
